Acts Of Service

We know what an act of service is and just how much this means to our Father who blesses us with abilities and a variety of creative ways to serve others through a willing heart and mind.  It is our choice to develop character traits that transform us into becoming more Christ-like.  Our goal should therefore be to follow and emulate Christ's perfect example during our life-long quest to resist our carnal human nature and overcome selfish tendencies.  With the aid of God's Holy Spirit -- the Helper, we know we can do it because He gives us the strength when we ask in prayer, thereby we are strengthened to continue on no matter the circumstances around us.

Who do you think of with beautiful acts of service from the Bible?  There are many examples to read and learn from.  My personal favourite apart from Christ is that of Tabitha also known as Dorcas.  A humble woman who blessed so many with gifted abilities, thereby bringing to life scripture from Ecclesiastes 9:10.  Now it is true that not all of us can sew fine garments but what we can draw from her life was that she had a willing heart.  You may like to refer to Acts 9 to refresh your memory on how God chose to reveal her example to us for our benefit.

You may have someone else in mind apart from the Bible who you know of personally whether still living or waiting for their change.  Recently while listening to an online sermon there was an account shared about an elderly lady who enjoyed cooking and was rather talented at making many dishes to share with others.  What moved my heart was to learn that she would quietly ask brethren what their favourite food was and then set about to make it to take to the next potluck occasion.  How lovely and thoughtful is that!  Her example brings scripture from Galatians 6:10 to mind.

Acts of service can be as small as a timely smile, or talking to someone sitting alone, or writing a short note in a card just to say hello and take interest in another.  Any of these acts can lift the other up especially if feeling sad or lonely.  Many are private and do not want to share about their life and this is their choice.  We can choose to edify another simply, inexpensively, lovingly, with a caring heart and desire to help.   Praying to God to ask for ideas in ways you can serve others is a very good place to start -- in fact it is the best place to start as He has perfect wisdom in all matters.  God also knows the needs of everyone so who better to ask?!  We all have the potential to give acts of service as we rely on God's strength and power to help us care for others.
