Back In The Day

Back In The Day

Once upon a time and

Back in the day much younger,
We had such a hunger,
For growing up quickly and…

Measured against the wall,
Pencil marks to show how tall,
Growing out of clothing too,
Meant getting something new.

We played outside and were gay,
How things were back in the day,
We walked many miles to school,
Where the nuns held wooden rule.

A glass bottle of cold milk,
At recess smooth as silk,
Cream on top hot in summer,
That was a nasty bummer.

Home again no time to sit,
We snacked and played a bit,
Homework done, books about,
Bath time, reading, lights out.

TV cartoons were funny,
The Flintstones and Bugs Bunny,
Weekend programmes with lunch,
Watching The Brady Bunch.

Dinner cooked and served by Mum,
When outside called to come
Inside at kitchen table,
This is fact, not fable.

Add to that back in the day,
Everything put on our plate,
That's exactly what we ate,
Like it or lump it not our way.

Back in the day last century,
Are now distant memory,
We truly had fun on swings,
Went up so high felt like wings.

Marbles, go-karts, Hoolahoops,
Some adults said nincompoops,
Back in the day that's how it was,
Other stuff too just because.

Flying kites, riding bikes,
Little ones still on trikes,
Hopskotch, elastics, skipping,
Swapcards, hope none are missing.

Back in the day was the Milk Bar,
Child's lolly fantasy jar,
We could walk there not far,
Too young to drive a car.

Fruit Tingles, Jelly Babies,
Marella Jubes and Wizz Fizz,
Liquorice straps, Milk Bottles,
Sherbet and Choo Choo bars.

Back in the day life was care free,
Children laughed so hard they peed,
No accident with silly fools,
When they tinkle in swimming pools.

Walt Disney movies Sunday nights,
Bambi, Cinderella, Snow White,
Sound of Music on silver screen,
Holiday treat we were keen.

Back in the day Dad had the wheel,
Mum in the front, kids in the back,
No seatbelts, she'll be right Jack,
Waving to strangers had appeal.

Oh we poked out our tongues in fun,
Some poked back to us, some none,
We all had a laugh on the way,
Home from the beach after long day.

It was simple back in the day,
Sand hosed off on lawn that's the way,
In the front yard sprinkler fun,
Those were the days, now all done.
